When computers communicate with each other, there needs to be a common set of rules and instructions that each computer follows. A specific set of communication rules is called a protocol.

It's an agreements between the communicating parties on how communication is proceed. the agreement species a common language that two computers use to exchange message. 

It specifies that exact format and meaning of each message that a computer can send. 

It also specifies the conditions under which a computer should send a given message and how a computer should respond when a message is arrived.
