History of Computer in Nepal


Nowadays most of the organization, schools, colleges, banks etc. use computer for record keeping, data based and even for handling their official works and most of the people uses laptops and PCs for their home. If we see the history about Computer in Nepal, only from 2028 BS we can find the use of computer first time for the census calculation.

There are many Computer Training centers were established to give training and education about computer and many Nepalese students went to different countries to pursue the computer educations. At present Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) is the governing body of Nepal. The computer history of Nepal is given below in the table.

2018 BS
The electronic calculator called “FACIT” was used for census.
2028 BS
The second generation mainframe computer (IBM 1401) was used.
Was bought on hire for census by paying Rs. 1, 25,000 per month and it took 1 year 7 months and 15 days to process the census data.
2031 BS
A center for Electronic Data Processing Center (later renamed to National Computer Center (NCC)) was established.
2038 BS
The second generation mainframe computer (ICL 2950/10) was used for census.  
It was funded by UNDP and UNFPA at 2 million US dollar.
2039 BS onwards
Then 2039 BS onwards many microcomputers like Apple, IBM and Vector etc. were brought in Nepal.
