What is Super computer? Explain its
application in real time situations.
Supercomputers are the
largest, fastest and the most expensive computers. They have a large memory
capacity and very high processing speed. Its word length is more than 128 bits.
They can perform billions of
instructions per second (BIPS). Supercomputers perform large and complex
mathematical computations in High speed. The first successful Supercomputer was invented by Seymour Cray in the
year 1976, Cray 1. Supercomputers are the most expensive computers computer to
other computers. It requires more space to Setup the computer. Supercomputers typically
have multiple processors and a variety of other technological tricks to ensure
that they run smoothly. They are designed to use for Weather forecasting,
Aircraft and Space Engineering, Scientific Research etc.
Its Application in real time situations are as follows:
· In
Petroleum industry: to
analyze volumes of seismic data which are gathered during oil seeking explorations
to identify areas where there is possibility of getting petroleum products
inside the earth.
· In Aerospace
Industry: to simulate airflow around
an aircraft at different speeds and altitude. This helps in producing an
effective aerodynamic design for superior performance.
·
Meteorological: Centers use supercomputers for weather
forecasting.
·
In biomedical
research: atomic nuclear and plasma
analysis- to study the structure of viruses such as that causing AIDS.
·
For weapons
research and development,
sending rockets to space etc.
Study
of DNA structure and genetic engineering.
